News
Make sure you are connected to the NYU Ballroom Team online! Sign up for our mailing list and the Groupspace you will start receiving updates about our classes and meetings. Groupspaces is the main source of communication for our team so it is more important that you join Groupspaces rather than the NYU list serve.
If you missed our first meeting, but would still like to join, please come to our Newcomer lessons (time, day, and location TBD). An Eboard member will be there to answer any questions you may have. For any other queries, please
contact the team secretary, Eugene Jaw, at ej505@nyu.edu.
Team Lessons
Team lessons serve as the first introduction to Ballroom and Latin dance for new members and require no previous Ballroom dance experience. During each lesson you will switch dance partners multiple times and will have the opportunity to make many friends on the team as you learn the dances. The lessons are more ensemble oriented, and build on the sense of cooperation and team spirit. More importantly, they focus on learning basic steps and technique. The more advanced dancers run dance exercises, review step sequences and encourage you to develop your own personality and sense of dance.
The dances you will learn with us are:
Standard: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz
Latin: Cha Cha, Rumba,Samba, Jive, Paso Doble

For complete information about steps and the dances we’ll be covering each week, see the Newcomer Syllabus on our Groupspaces account under the ‘Files’ tab. You can also find links to all the lesson videos under the ‘Lesson Videos’ tab.
NYU Student Newcomer Membership 2011-2012
All new team members without prior Ballroom dance experience are considered Newcomers for their first year on the team. During
the first semester, typically the Fall semester, Newcomers can attend weekly lessons, as well as attending any social events we hold. Newcomer members do not travel with the team to compete in their first semester so that they can learn the dances and get a good basis of the dances before competing. Newcomer members during their second semester on the team will have the option of becoming competing members and will be able to join us at the competitions that we attend to compete against Newcomers from other schools.
THE TIME, DAY, AND LOCATION OF NEWCOMER LESSONS IS STILL TBD BY NYU. ONCE THEY LET US KNOW WE WILL ANNOUNCE IT.
To be an active Newcomer you should:
